Filter Coffee
For every eight ounces of coffee you want to brew, you will use 18 grams of coffee, and add 270g of water that is 195-205℉. Use these as guidelines to scale your recipe to make as much coffee you want. Use only the highest quality, freshly ground coffee, and please please please use filtered water or spring water.
Setup: Put your filter in the coffee brewer, and brewer on top of a wide-mouth mason jar or similar vessel. Put your vessel and brewer on top of a digital scale.
Dose: Add (x) grams of coffee to the coffee brewer. You determine (x) by how many cups you want to make.
Bloom: Add a little bit of hot water to the coffee grounds to fully wet them and prime them for tastiness, wait about 30-40 seconds to allow for proper degassing of the coffee grounds.
Water: Add the rest of your water. Continue to add water until your brewer is full, or you have added all of your water. The amount of total water is determined by how many cups of coffee you are making.
Drain: Let the water drain through the bed of coffee. The amount of total brew time depends on how many cups of coffee you are making and the grind size. This is by no means comprehensive, but use the following time and grind guides to make coffee uniformly. To achieve best results only use a burr grinder with multiple different grind sizes.
Taste: Time to finally pour into your mug and enjoy. Take note of how your coffee tastes. There can be a couple of things that went wrong in the brew process.
Protip: Do not use distilled water or specifically reverse-osmosis filtered water because they do not have enough mineral content to facilitate coffee brewing.
- One eight-ounce cup would require 18 grams of coffee
- Two eight-ounce cups would require 36 grams
- The amount of water depends on how much coffee you are using, this amount of water is two times as much coffee as you are using.
- One eight-ounce cup will require 18 grams of coffee, and so you’ll add 36 grams of water to bloom it
- Two eight-ounce cups will require 36 grams of coffee, and so you’ll add 104 grams of water to bloom it
- One eight-ounce cup would require 18 grams of coffee, and 270 grams of hot water (this includes the 36g of water you added to bloom your coffee)
- Three eight-ounce cups would require 54 grams of coffee, and 810 grams of hot water (this also includes the 108 grams of water you added to bloom your coffee.
- One-eight ounce cup should take about 1:30-2:30 total brew time and the grind size will usually be a little finer than kosher sea salt
- Two-eight ounce cups should take about 3:30-4:30 total brew time and the grind size will usually be about the size of kosher sea salt
- Three-eight ounce cups or more should take about 4:30-5:30 total brew time and the grind size will be coarser than the size of kosher sea salt.
- You might find that the cup of coffee isn’t well balanced, and it was outside the time zones listed above. If your brew is taking too long, coarsen your grind size. If your brew is taking too short of time, fine your grind size. This should balance your coffee out.
- You might find that the coffee doesn’t taste strong enough, or tastes too strong. If your coffee doesn’t taste strong enough, simply add more coffee grounds in step two. Try one gram increases and decreases until you find the strength you are looking for.
- As you change the amount of coffee you initially use, you might have to make more grind adjustments to get the coffee to taste well balanced
